FAQs

A monks bench, also known as a settle table, is a dual-purpose piece of furniture that typically features a hinged backrest which folds down over the arms to convert the seat into a table. Originating in medieval times, they were designed to save space in smaller dwellings and monastic quarters by combining dining or working surfaces with a storage box seat.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from solid English or European oak, utilizing traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, tongue and groove paneling, and hand-cut dovetails for the box base. Hardware typically includes hand-forged iron hinges or wooden pivot pins to facilitate the folding mechanism.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural timber aging, including surface oxidation, shrinkage cracks, and tool marks consistent with hand-working rather than modern machinery. Fasteners such as handmade nails, peg joints instead of modern screws, and genuine wear patterns on high-contact areas like the seat edges and arms indicate age.

A wooden storage bench serves as a functional anchor in entrance halls or corridors, offering discreet storage for shoes and accessories while providing a practical seating area. In living spaces, it can be positioned against a plain wall to contrast historic woodwork with contemporary minimalist decor, or used as a striking statement piece in an open-plan kitchen.

Maintain the timber by applying natural beeswax periodically to nourish the grain and protect against drying out, avoiding silicone-based polishes. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent wood warping or splitting.
