A pair of Georgian Royal Portraits: Royal Highnesses Prince Charles & Princess Augusta of Brunswick & Lunenburg, after Johann Georg Ziesenis and Joshua Reynolds respectively, engraved by Richard Houston and published by Carrington Bowles, in St. Paul''s Churchyard, London.
Circa: 1765
A beautiful pair of hand painted reverse glass mezzotints presented in their original ebonised and gilded fruitwood frames.
Princess Augusta (1737-1813) was the eldest daughter of Frederick, Prince of Wales. She married Charles, hereditary prince of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1735–1806) in 1764. Their daughter Caroline was to become the wife of George IV. The Duke was appointed commander-in-chief of the Prussian army in 1806 but sadly he died a few months later from serious injuries he received at the battle of Auerstadt.
Richard Houston was one of a celebrated group of Irish print-makers specialising in mezzotint. He worked predominantly for the Bowles family and absconded for unpaid debts in 1762.
