Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Canterbury is a low, compartmentalised wooden stand created in the late 18th and 19th centuries to hold sheet music or periodicals. Named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who originally commissioned the design, these portable storage pieces feature vertical dividers, a base drawer, and castors.

19th-century Canterburys were constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, joined with dovetail construction in the drawers. Secondary timbers like pine or oak were used for internal drawer linings, paired with brass castors and handles.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer, authentic surface patination on the mahogany, and brass castors attached to turned or tapered legs. The timber displays natural wear and oxidisation consistent with period construction.

An antique Canterbury functions effectively alongside a sofa or armchair as a magazine, book, or vinyl record holder. It can also be placed in an entry hall or study to store files, art prints, or oversized books.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly using a soft, dry cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the surface finish. Position the piece away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight to prevent timber movement, cracking, or colour fading.
