William Greaves (1852-1938) was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. He travelled and exhibited widely at galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and Liverpool. He worked mostly in oils and his subjects include landscapes in and around Wharfedale in Yorkshire and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire.
''Towards Old Scriven Near Knaresborough, Early Spring,'' is a lovely example. An oil on canvas measuring 12''x 16'' it is signed lower left and is framed in a period gilt frame giving an overall size of 19''x 23''.
