George Dawe: Portrait of the Duke of York

Description

George DAWE (?): (1781-1829): an interesting OIL PAINTING on panel of the Duke of York. He is depicted wearing his military uniform, complete with Star of the Garter, seated on a rather fancy chair, whilst holding a document (or letter) in his hands. Complete with its original deeply moulded gilded wooden frame, this is apparently unsigned, although there is a period plaque to the lower edge. This painting is behind glass which has not been removed to inspect closely. 16ins x 13ins (40.5 x 33cms)

* PRINCE FREDERICK, second son (of fourteen!) of George III and Queen Charlotte. was made Duke of York in 1784.

** George DAWE (1781-1829) was an English portraitist, famous for painting military figures, including an astonishing 329 portraits of Russian generals active during Napoleon’s invasion of Russia.
