Pair Of Alpine Landscape Watercolours By John Harwicke Lewis

£295    $376    €357
A fine pair of Alpine watercolour landscapes by the artist John Hardwicke Lewis 1840-1927. The paintings are both superbly detailed works, particularly in the recording of the topography, but also with a feel of Summer and life with the alpine flowers blooming. The pair are both ascribed a location on the reverse, Muhlen Oberhalbstein and The Eiger, Hormle and Fisscherhun Glacier from Waldspitz, both of these views are in the Swiss Alps. The pair are signed to the lower right by monogram and retain the artist’s full name on the mounts. John Hardwicke Lewis was born in India in 1840 and studied under his father and later in Paris. He lived in the south of England and exhibited widely including The Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists. He exhibited a staggering 295 works at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Interestingly he also exhibited at the Alpine Club Gallery in London and given the quality of these works I would be surprized if they were not shown here. The paintings have very good bright, fresh colours and are in good condition with some light foxing marks as can be seen in the photographs. The gilt frames and mounts are the original and in good condition with some very minor touching in in places. The pair are great examples of Alpine watercolour landscapes with a superb decorative appeal. C.1900.
