Late 18th Century Dutch / Northern European Flower Still Life On Oak Panel
£1,250 $1,693 €1,473
A highly decorative late 18th-century Dutch or Northern European School flower still life, oil on chamfered oak panel, depicting a loose arrangement of garden flowers set against a dark ground.
The composition follows the Dutch still-life tradition, but with a softer and more naturalised late 18th-century sensibility. Rather than presenting flowers as a formal display of wealth or costly exotic novelties, the bouquet has a freer, more domestic character. Foxgloves appear among classic garden favourites, arranged in a sweeping, asymmetrical design, with the blooms spilling slightly outward rather than being tightly contained. This looser, lightly wild manner of arrangement reflects the changing taste of the mid-to-late 18th century, when influential design and flower-arranging guides in Britain and Europe increasingly advised that flowers in the home — and by extension in painted still lifes — should appear more natural, informal, and gracefully unforced.
The lack of expensive lux...ury objects, rare novelties, shells, silver, porcelain or overt symbols of display also supports a later 18th-century interpretation. The painting feels less concerned with the grand status language of 17th-century Dutch still life and more aligned with the domestic, garden-based taste that became increasingly fashionable from the mid-1700s onward. The combination of foxgloves with traditional cultivated flowers, together with the broad, slightly sprawling asymmetry of the arrangement, suggests a likely date around circa 1760–1800.
The work is painted on an oak panel with chamfered edges, a detail consistent with older panel preparation. The reverse retains historic English paper backing, including printed turnpike/toll wording relating to roads, horses, draught animals and livestock. The paper appears to relate to the British turnpike system, with wording consistent with late 18th-century turnpike legislation and toll notices, including the period around the Turnpike Act of 1770. This strongly suggests that the painting was later framed, backed, or held in an English collection, possibly in the Chesterfield / Mansfield area.
The painting presents well, with stable craquelure and an attractive aged surface. A characterful and atmospheric flower still life, combining Dutch still-life tradition with the looser, more natural floral taste of the later 18th century.
