Prometheus Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The scene is enchanting with fine detail in the garden, and a child playing with a boat in the pond, as his mother and dog look on watchfully. The work is in excellent untouched condition and is signed to the lower centre W.Swindell and dated 1885. The artist W.Swindell is an enigma, he was obviously a very capable landscape artist but there is no record of him, this is most likely that either he was a talented amateur or purely a commercial artist, did not exhibit and was therefore not recorded in the way artists usually are. The painting is mounted in what is likely the original frame which is in good untouched condition, it is older than the painting and was probably reused for this work. The whole is a great Victorian cottage painting and as good an example as you will see.
