Mimosas, White and Yellow Flowers, Ca 1920 Woman Artist Ca 1920 French Arts and Crafts Oil on Board

1900 - 1920
Description

One of the very first paintings I sold on SellingAntiques six years ago was by Suzanne Bernouard. I am thrilled to finally have another painting by her available.

Suzanne exhibited at the prominent Galerie Druet in the 1920s and at the Salon des Tuileries.

One of the most important art critics of his time, André Salmon writes about Suzanne Bernouard and the (French) Arts and Crafts movement in his book “Young French Painting in 1912: “One could not neglect either Mademoiselles Albertine or Suzanne Bernouard, whose art is minor yet occupies a place of importance (…) They paint and embroider. It is not decorative art that lead them to painting. They paint flowers and lilies (...) They have imagined fabulous and live roses that shimmer on the cushions of drawing rooms where the most modern poems are recited and where the boldest melodies resound. One song by Ravel makes their petals shake ….”

Suzanne was the sister of poet and publisher François Bernouard and the wife of the architect and artist Louis Sue (1875-1968), who was also a major figure the art nouveau mouvement. The painting presented was in Louis Sue's personal collection and comes from his estate. It bears on the verso the stamp of the 1968 Louis Sue sale.

Our oil on board measures 41 x 31.5 cm, is signed at the lower right and presented in its original, beautifully water-gilded frame which has minor wear and tear. The overall framed size is 48 x 37.5 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
