Late 17th-century French School, Portrait of a Young Nobleman - Antique Oil Painting

17th century
Description

This splendid late 17th-century French school oil painting depicts a young nobleman standing somewhat haughtily before a landscape.

Dressed in a sumptuous blue velvet cloak, white lace cravat, and embroidered waistcoat, one can imagine that he’s the image of his father. It’s an audacious display of decadence and wealth. The view beyond could be a reference to the estate he’s due to inherit.

Produced during the reign of King Louis XIV, extravagant French fashion was influenced by a flourishing textile trade. France had transformed fashion into a thriving industry and copious designers were emerging with new ideas and trends. It’s interesting to consider how this young man felt, with his left arm nonchalantly draped over the classical architecture.

Held within a later burr walnut frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 26½” x 34” / 67cm x 87cm

Year of creation: c. 1690

Provenance: Private collection, UK.

Condition: Assessed and approved by our conservator. Cleaned. Canvas relined. Fine and settled craquelure, as you would expect. The paint layer is stable. Frame with light marks and signs of age.

Our reference: BRV1862

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
