Outside the Restaurant on a Summer Evening, Paris 1963, Woman Artist Marie Lucie Valtat Oil on Canvas

1940 - 1960
Description

Marie-Lucie Nessi was born in Paris in 1910 to a Swiss father and a German mother. Aged 16 year, she was able to convince her parents to allow her to attend drawing classes.

After nearly two years of studies, Marie-Lucie completed her training in the ateliers of Billoul and André Lhote, at the Académie de La Grande Chaumière and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. With her fellow students she spent many evenings in the company of Jacques Hélion, Kisling or Foujita, whom they used to meet in the cafés of Montparnasse.

She married Jean Valtat, the son of the Fauve artist Louis Valtat, but although her father-in-law encouraged her to paint, Marie-Lucie Valtat hardly found time, as she had to assist her husband, now Doctor Jean Valtat, as well as raise their children. Marie Lucie's kindliness was not rewarded: her husband left her for his mistress and abandoned her and the kids.

Obliged to earn a living, Marie-Lucie Nessi started to produce ceramics, hoping to turn her artistic talents to profit.

From 1958, thanks to the assistance of her mother-in-law Suzanne, who remained firmly attached to her, Nessi abandoned ceramics and at last devoted herself entirely to painting. All that's well ends well:

Wally Findlay International Galleries in the US signed an exclusive contract with her in 1972, which brought her not only a certain financial security, but also the satisfaction of seeing her work appreciated by an international public.

Our work by Marie Lucie dates from 1963. It is signed at the lower right and titled "Av Mac Mahon" on the verso. The Avenue Mac-Mahon is in the 17th Arrondissement of Paris, leading up the the Place de l'Etoile . Measuring 46 x 38 cm, the overall framed size is 53 x 62 cm (some wear to frame)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
