Henri Cassinelli (1833/40-1927) was the son of an art dealer in Le Havre. Henri started by painting harbour scenes in his home town, and soon also painted land and seascapes in nearly Honfleur. He studied with Jean-Baptiste Durand Brager in Paris and also became close to Eugčne Boudin. Boudin and Cassinelli often worked together on the Normandy coast, and even collaborated and co signed a number of paintings. One of them is in the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, another in the Boudin museum in Honfleur.
Cassinelli was hence close to the ''Normandy/Impressionist gang'', and Claude Monet even drew a caricature of him and nicknamed him ''Rufus Croutinelli''.
Our atmospheric and very freely sketched watercolour certainly depicts to coast near Honfleur in Normandy. Measuring 13 x 20 cm at sight, the overall size in an elegant mount and frame are 32 x 38.5 cm.
