19th century
Description

The goat herd in Arcadian Landscape

Late 18th-century Italianate landscape with classical ruins

Very good quality late 18th/early 19th-century extensive river classical landscape with ruins and a Roman Campagna in the distance.

A very competent British artist probably painted it in the /Claude Lorrain style.

Italianate classical landscape paintings with ruins were a popular genre in European art during the 17th and 18th centuries. These paintings typically featured classical ruins set in idyllic landscapes, often with a focus on natural beauty and the passing of time.

Some notable examples of Italianate classical landscape paintings with ruins include:

Claude Lorrain’s “Landscape with Ruins” (1636): This painting depicts a pastoral landscape with ancient ruins in the foreground. The composition is balanced and serene, with a warm, golden light suffusing the scene.

Nicolas Poussin’s “Landscape with a Calm” (1650-51): In this painting, the ruins of a classical temple are visible on a hill in the background. The foreground is dominated by a tranquil river scene, with trees and foliage on either side.

Condition

The painting has been to our expert conservators, the painting has had a light clean small restore in the sky and the canvas has been fully relined. The frame has also been restored.

Very good antique condition.

Italianate classical landscapes represent an idealised view of the Italian countryside, popularised during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by artists such as Claude Lorrain and Gaspard Dughet. These works feature classical architecture, ruins, pastoral vistas, and balanced, harmonious compositions influenced by Greco-Roman antiquity.

Eighteenth-century landscape paintings were executed using oil paints mixed with natural ground pigments on hand-stretched linen canvas. Frames were carved from timber and coated with gesso before application of gold leaf gilding.

Period oil paintings display natural age-related craquelure across the paint surface, hand-loomed canvas weaves, and period-appropriate stretcher construction. The reverse side often exhibits dark oxidisation on the canvas and frame timber consistent with age.

A classical landscape painting can be styled above a fireplace mantel, a console table, or hung on a focal wall to create architectural visual interest. Complementary light fixtures, such as a brass picture light, highlight the tonal depth and detailed composition.

Preserve oil paintings by hanging them away from direct sunlight, moisture, and fluctuating heat sources. Remove surface dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water on both the painted canvas and delicate gilded frame.
