Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual nineteenth-century French provincial fruitwood dresser stands 233 cm high, 147 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. The warm brown timber exhibits a polished finish and a distinct patina across its multiple components. The upper section comprises a moulded cornice, a parquetry inlaid pediment with star marquetry, four open plate racks fitted with horizontal front bars, and two small spice drawers. The lower base section contains two frieze drawers fitted with hand-made steel handles and integrated escutcheons, positioned above a two-door cabinet with foliate-carved panel doors. A carved shaped skirt rests upon short scrolled feet at the base. In a contemporary home, this large storage and display piece serves well in a traditional kitchen or dining room for displaying tableware and storing kitchenware. The combination of open shelving and enclosed cupboard space provides practical organisation. The substantial scale makes it suitable for placement against a large dining room wall or in a spacious country kitchen where it functions as a traditional Welsh dresser or kitchen hutch.

FAQs

To maintain fruitwood, apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cotton cloth, rubbing along the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, splitting, or fading of the natural patina.

A tall dresser functions effectively as a focal point in a modern kitchen, dining area, or open-plan living space. Styling the upper shelves with a mix of neutral ceramics, contemporary glass, and art creates a balanced contrast between historical timber textures and modern minimalism.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand craftsmanship, including irregular wooden pegs, hand-sawn timber marks on back panels, and original hand-hammered iron fittings. Natural age-related shrinkage in wider panels, original hand-carved aprons, and uneven wear along lower stretchers or feet also indicate genuine age.

Traditional French vaisseliers and dressers were typically constructed from solid regional timbers, particularly fruitwoods such as cherry, pear, or apple, along with oak and walnut. Construction relied on mortise-and-tenon joinery secured with wood pegs, hand-forged iron hardware, and decorative marquetry inlays.

French provincial furniture originated in the 18th century, created by regional cabinetmakers who adapted ornate Parisian styles into functional, durable pieces for country homes. Characterised by practical proportions, subtle carving, and native hardwoods like fruitwood or oak, these items balanced elegance with daily utility.
