The colours of this painting, painted with rich, thick impasto, are to die for. Strong yet harmonious, they give the impression of enamel, or even stained glass. The work is so distinctive in style that it should be possible to identify the artist (and I am searching) but I have never seen anything quite like it. If anything it makes me think of the early work of Hans Hofmann (1880-1966), one of the rare abstract expressionists whose art was unapologetically joyous.
Our oil on canvas with stable craquelure dates from circa 1945-50, is unsigned. Measuring 30 x 60 cm, it is presented in its original artist strip frame, in which it was painted - the are traces of oil colour on the inside of the frame. The overall size is 33 x 62.5 cm.
