Oil Painting of a Wine Tasting

1920 - 1940
Description

Amusing amateur oil painting on canvas c.1930 after a work by the celebrated German artist Eduard von Grutzner. In the cellar of a monastic winery a gentleman in a Tyrolean hat and long leather boots (a wine merchant perhaps?) drinks a toast with a wily looking old friar whist another brother looks on holding a decanter of wine. Grutzner was famous for genre scenes of monks, frequently involving alcohol! Several monasteries were involved in the production of wine in Southern Germany and the Austrian Tyrol. Signed in the lower left corner and inscribed Nach (after) Grutzner. Presented on a simple wooden stretcher. With some wear and woodworm holes to the edges.
