An art nouveau period view over Rome from the Villa Medicis by Joseph Marius Jean Avy. Bearing numerous inscriptions on the verso if its original frame from previous exhibitions, the work was titled by the artist ''Visions of St Peter''s (Basilica).
Avy was born in Marseille to a businessman father, but decided to break with family tradition and study painting in Paris with Léon Bonnat and Albert Maignan.
From 1900 until 1933 he regularly exhibited at the ''Salon des artistes français'' and, from 1934 to 1939, the year of his death, at the ''Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts''.
Avy loved Rome and spent a considerable amount of time there. Interestingly, Avy''s work in the Paris Petit Palais Museum is a gouache/watercolour on paper, equally depicting Rome and painted just five years later. A screenshot is attached for reference.
A major work by Avy also is in the collection of the Musée des Années Trente in Boulogne Billancourt. Interestingly, Avy''s work in the Petit Palais is a gouache/watercolour on paper, also, equally depicting Rome and painted just five years later. A screenshot from the Paris Musées website is attached for reference.
Our watercolour and gouache on paper is signed and dated at the lower right. Measuring 36 x 27.5 cm, the overall size in its simple original frame is 39 x 30.5 cm.
