Davi Cox OWS fl1783-1859.David Cox Senior is one of the best known of all watercolour painters and his life is very well documented.He exhibited from 1805,becoming an OWS in 1820.He taught at schools in Hereford,was drawing master at the Miltary College,Farnham and had private pupils.He went on sketching tours to the Continent,England and especially wales.He moved back to live in Birmingham in 1841 shortly after he had discovered the rough textured paler(now called Cox paper) which gives his later work its distinctive character.His work was immensely popular.He wrote books on painting.Examples of his work can be found in all the best public collections eg Br Museum,V&A and the Tate. ‘ An Archway with a Horse’ unsigned pencil drawing, image size12x8.5 cms framed size 29.5x24.5cms,provenance:out of a sketchbook ex.Mr Hill collection.Sketchbook inscribed)
