Intended as a conveyance of love, this gentle portrayal was probably created for a potential suitor. A portrait commissioned by her family in expectation of an appropriate match.
Several books were written on the subject with the significance of every flower meticulously described. Ladies were keen to demonstrate their understanding by carefully curating their posies.
The inclusion of red and white roses is a reference to unity, a bond between souls.
