This exhibition quality side cabinet dates from 1850 in the French Revival style, made from burr walnut and kingwood with Goncalo Alvez moulding to the plinth, glazed doors, and an internal shelf. The piece displays warm brown tones with kingwood crossbanding, complemented by gilt-bronze ormolu mounts, carved scrollwork along the upper sides, and moulded borders around the glass panels. Rows of upright books with green, red, and blue spines sit on the shelves, alongside two decorative porcelain vases decorated with blue and orange patterns on a white glaze, while the timber shows natural figuring and grain patterns. The cabinet measures 110 cm high and 164 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this cabinet provides elegant display storage in a formal living room, dining room, or entrance hall for fine porcelain, decorative objects, and bound books. The glazed double doors protect the contents while offering full visibility from the room.

French Revival side cabinets created during the mid-to-late 19th century draw design inspiration from Louis XV and XVI silhouettes. They typically feature serpentine or shaped profiles, rich burr walnut or kingwood veneers, glass pane door fronts, and decorative gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts.

Craftsmen utilised solid oak or pine for the secondary carcass structure, overlaid with select burr walnut, mahogany, or kingwood veneers. Decorative accents consisted of hand-chased gilt-bronze mounts, cast brass beaded moulding, and glass door panels.

Authentic period cabinets display hand-cut joinery, variable thickness in hand-cut veneers, and naturally aged timber lining. Gilt-bronze mounts should feature casting seams, screw fixings appropriate to the era, and subtle surface oxidisation in recessed areas.

A side cabinet serves as a focal piece when placed against neutral walls in modern living rooms or hallways. Designers use the glass shelves to curate collections of modern ceramics or bound volumes, balancing classical craftsmanship with modern simplicity.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply high-grade beeswax twice yearly along the grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources to prevent veneer shrinkage, and clean metal mounts using a dry cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
