Boats and Sails in the South of France, Ca 1920 Provence, St Tropez or Martigues, the Cote D'azur Oil on Panel

1900 - 1920
Description

Painted in the manner of the Mediterranean artists - with a paint knife rather than with brushes - this colourful view of a small fishing port in the South of France is a work by Czech artist Karel "Charles" Cermak.

Born in Pilsen in Bohemia in 1877, Cermak - like so many artists at the turn of the century- came to France, where he settled in Saint Tropez. He became known for his landscapes of Provence and depictions of the Riviera, still perfectly unspoiled at the time. He particularly loved the harbour of the village of Saint Tropez.

Cermak exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Indépendants from 1929 à 1931. Our oil on panel, dating from this period, is signed at the lower right and measures 44 x 38 cm. Small pieces of wood were added on each side for the painting to fit into a standard 38 x 46 cm frame. The overall framed size size is 54 x 66 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
