Fine Victorian Oil Painting of Dogs in Landscape

A wonderful oil on canvas of hounds in a landscape setting. The work is typically English school of the nineteenth century with a slight naivety common to provincial animal painting of the time. The dogs are shown in a variety of poses and are most likely hunting hounds from a pack and probably the prize specimens that the owner particularly wanted to record. The landscape setting is quite sparingly depicted with the focus very much on the dogs, it does have a moorland, marginal feel about it and is probably a real location. The painting is not signed on the front but the full details of the artist are on the reverse: ‘Painted by W.P.Chapman. 1877. 10 Dunalley Parade, St. Paul’s. Cheltenham’ inscribed in the artist’s hand. I can find no record of W.P.Chapman and it is likely he was an artist working from Cheltenham by commission and did not exhibit, as is so often the case with animal painters at the time. The painting is in very good antique condition. It has had a small hole repaired as is indicated by the patch on the reverse, this repair is not visible from the front. The gilt frame is the original and in mainly untouched condition with a wonderful faded and worn gilt finish, it has had some repair over the years in places. The whole is a superb example of provincial animal painting with a great decorative appeal.
