Fairy Bells Watercolour by Arthur H Buckland

A superb watercolour in the tradition of Victorian fairy painting by Arthur H Buckland 1870-1948. The two fairy children are seen sitting on blossom as they ring the harebells with silken threads. The quality of the work is quite superb, the fairies are beautifully depicted and, in such detail, and so technically well observed that they really do look as if they could move. It is very much in the tradition of fairy painting that thrived in the Victorian period though from a slightly later date. The whole is in untouched condition with some odd minor marks and the colours are as fresh and true as the day it was painted. The unusual frame is also the original and in excellent untouched condition. The work is signed to the lower right and dated: ‘Arthur H Buckland, 1929’. Arthur Herbert Buckland was born in 1870 in Taunton and studied at the Academie Julian in Paris. He exhibited between 1895 and 1927 at The Royal Academy and all the other major British exhibitions and also the Paris Salon. He was elected a full member of The Royal Society of British Artists in 1894. This work retains on the reverse the original exhibition label showing it was hung at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1929. The whole is a superb example of fairy painting but also a first-class example of painting in watercolour.
