This is a beautifully executed oil on canvas painting of Saint Roch who is a Catholic Confessor, known for his miraculous healing powers, especially invoked against the bubonic plague. He is often depicted with a wound on his thigh, which he is said to have acquired while tending to the sick during an epidemic of plague.
Saint Roch was born in Montpellier, France, in 1348 and died in Voghera, Italy, in 1376/79. He is venerated as the Patron Saint of several things, including and amongst other things: dogs, invalids, falsely accused people, bachelors, and skin diseases.
