English Impressionist Oil Sketch

A really interesting English Impressionist oil sketch. The work is on canvas laid to board and depicts a farmer ploughing in bad weather. In the foreground the horses can be seen straining under the weight of the plough while in the background the rain is driving. The technique is wonderful quick and confident with broad brushstrokes and a contrasting use of colour to define areas of light and shade. I particularly like the use of striations in the canvas to show the intense rain. The painting is not signed but this is not unusual for a sketch. The piece has been framed in a modern bold gilt frame that works very well in drawing the eye into the work. The whole is a great image beautifully captured. C.1900.
