Signed E a Bower (Later Lady Ethel Alice Chivers Harris) Original Early 20th Century Antique Oil Painting on Canvas Still Life Study of Pink Flowers

1900 - 1920
Description

Type of artwork: Original Oil Painting

Surface: Canvas

Artist and signature: Signed E A Bowers and inscribed on labels verso

Lady Ethel Harris Chivers Harris nee Bower

She Studied at Royal College of Art and became a member of 'The Slade Girls' as a student of Alphonse Legros at the University of London's Slade School of Art. They were responsible for a large number of the cast medals produced during the revival in Britain in the 1880s and 1890s. The majority of these students were women, and, as is the case with many women artists, they are now shadowy figures about whom little is known. Yet in their day their work attracted the attention of the art press, including an article by Charlotte Weeks entitled 'Women at Work: the Slade Girls'

Lady Harris, who as Ethel Bower had studied under Lanteri and who continued to make medals for many years, admitted in 1928 that 'the demand for this form of portraiture (medallic) is, at present, very limited in England
