The Hills of Provence: Shepherd in the Heather Landscape Near Ste Baume, Late 19th Century Oil on Canvas

Description

This light filled and atmospheric painting depicts the hills of Provence near the Sainte Baume.

Situated inland roughly between Marseilles and Toulon, Sainte Baume is a mountain crest with a natural grotto where Mary-Magdalene (yes, the biblical one) is purported to spent the final years of her life. In the arid summer landscape, we see a shepherd and his flock.

Dating from the late 19th Century, the oil on canvas is signed or annotated "JM van Wilden... bei Ste Baume, Provence 1889", probably for Johan Peter Wildenradt (1845-1909), a Danish painter who had settled in Provence.

Measuring for the canvas alone, the overall size with its original frame dating from circa 1900 is 40 x 60 cm.
