Cubist Still Life with Bananas, 1930 Art Deco Period Armenian Artist Oil on Canvas

1920 - 1940
Description

This lightly cubist still life with bananas and fresh green almonds in front of a stylised window and curtain is dynamic in its composition and restrained in its palette. This very juxtaposition that makes it so attractive and rewarding to look at. It is a beautiful work by Armenak Gundjian, an artist who had not been dealt a winning hand of cards in life. Born in Erzeroum in Armenia in 1893, he had to flee his native country during the Armenian genocide. He came to France and settled in Paris, where he worked as a draughtsman in parallel to painting. He became a naturalised French citizen in 1926. And yet- while I have no proof, I think he was likely deported during World War 2. At any rate, as there are no records of him after the 1930s, I believe his life was cut short.

Our rare painting by the artist measures 55 x 46 cm and is signed and dated at the lower right. The overall framed size is 65 x 56 cm.
