Early 19th-century British School, Old Everton - Antique Oil Painting

19th century
Description

This charming early 19th-century oil painting depicts a ramshackle street in ‘old Everton’, Liverpool. It’s possibly by the Liverpool-based artist, John Pennington (1773-1841).

Two figures, perhaps a mother and child, converse in the doorway of a quaint thatched cottage. While a third figure, a bonneted woman, carries a bundle under her right arm. Washing hangs over a nearby gate. Beyond, further dwellings peek from behind leafy foliage.

This was an area that Pennington knew personally. He was born in Liverpool and died at Everton Terrace. Here he’s captured a picturesque corner of Everton, which was probably a stone’s throw from his house. In the early 19th century it was developed due to a demand for housing, so this could be the only lasting image of these charming buildings.

Held within a gilt frame.
