The subject of the picture is now known by its Moari name Taranaki Maunga.

Moore was brought up in this area so would know the suject well. He went on to study at Goldsmiths College, London School of Art and also in Rome.

He exhibited in London in the 1930's, perhaps this is where the work was originally acquired.
