Our oil on board is French in origin. The work of a woman artist, it is faintly signed "Madeleine F..." , the surname being indistinct. Dating from the 1895-1900 period, it is painted on a quality panel by Dubus, an art supply shop where Vincent Van Gogh occasionally shopped! Celebrated artists such as Gustave Caillebotte and Claude Monet, also patronised the shop between 1877 à 1897. Monet had a student named Madeleine Fleury, and it possible that this painting is a work by her.
