Early 19th Century English Oil On Board Portrait Of An Infantry Officer.

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Period Portraits

Striking, fine quality and highly decorative 19th century oil on panel portrait of an English infantry officer circa 1830.

The handsome and charismatic sitter (traditionally identified as a member of the Bromley-Davenport family) is the very definition of dapper, he is painted half length, eyes to centre with eyebrow raised. He wears a military jacket with a dark blue facings and gold lace and fringed epaulettes. We know that the portrait dates to post 1810 as the sitters hair appears not to be powdered.

This genre of portrait was popular during the 19th century and there were many artists working in this area for both private commissions and public display. However this touching portrait of a striking gentleman, has all the hallmarks of a brilliant artist who knew how to get to the heart and soul of his subjects. A label verso indicates that this painting was sold via Sothebys at some point in its history, it also suggests that the artist may be W. Willoughby who worked in London and Lincolnshire.

This fine work is in an excellent taste of conservation and it is ready to hang and enjoy in a fine antique gilt frame.
