Brave Fine Art has dated this piece to the 1890s.
She’s emotionally bruised and bereaved, yet maintaining an air of high society elegance. Dressed entirely in black with sumptuous furs and conspicuous headwear. Right hand drooped to reveal a prominent wedding ring. Head partially turned to emphasise the light. It’s a sensitive portrayal of a strong woman.
The portrait was acquired from Norway and the artist is yet to be identified. It’s signed illegibly in the top right, perhaps Max H___.
