Church in Athens Oil Painting by Alfred Wolmark

An interesting oil on board by the artist Alfred Wolmark 1877-1961. The scene depicted is that of a church in Athens near Zappian. The technique used allows the colour of the board to show through as part of the depiction and shows a superb technical ability. The work is signed by monogram to the lower right which was a method often used by the artist. Alfred Wolmark was born in Warsaw, Poland, and emigrated to London before training at the Royal Academy Schools in the 1890s. His early brightly coloured Breton scenes are characterized by bold, geometric patterning and vivid colour, which owed much to the influence of post-impressionism. In addition to painting Wolmark created stained glass, decorative painted vases, ballet designs for Diaghilev, and illustrated Israel Zangwill's complete works. Wolmark exhibited widely during his lifetime in London, New York, and Paris, and his works feature in many important collections around the world. This work is an interesting example in very good condition having been professionally cleaned. The painting retains information on the reverse from the art dealer Phyllis Gorlick King who was herself an important art dealer and painter from the period. The work is framed in a good quality period painted frame. The whole is in excellent condition and ready to hang. C.1930
