An interesting oil on board by the artist Alfred Wolmark 1877-1961. The scene depicted is that of a church in Athens near Zappian. The technique used allows the colour of the board to show through as part of the depiction and shows a superb technical ability. The work is signed by monogram to the lower right which was a method often used by the artist. Alfred Wolmark was born in Warsaw, Poland, and emigrated to London before training at the Royal Academy Schools in the 1890s. His early brightly coloured Breton scenes are characterized by bold, geometric patterning and vivid colour, which owed much to the influence of post-impressionism. In addition to painting Wolmark created stained glass, decorative painted vases, ballet designs for Diaghilev, and illustrated Israel Zangwill''s complete works.
