19th-century British School, Maritime Scene with Turbulent Sea - Antique Oil Painting

19th century
Description

This energetic late 19th-century British oil painting depicts a busy maritime scene.

Several fishing vessels, battered by the elements, lean violently amid a relentless sea. A coastal town beyond seems like a mirage. They’re so close to civilization yet immersed in the perils of sailing. The ‘Gipsy’ is heeling, its red ensign fluttering frantically.

It’s an accomplished piece with a particularly intelligent composition. Note the two steamboats chugging away in the distance. They create a triangle when viewed with the ‘Gipsy’ - drawing the eye towards the main action, thus building drama. There’s also an interesting diagonal from the bottom right through to the tallest buildings on the shore.

The painting is unsigned and we feel it’s probably a study ahead of a larger piece by a well-established artist. There’s evidence of changes, such as with the highest ensign, which has moved position.

Held within a gilt frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas laid on board

Overall size: 36½” x 26½” / 93cm x 67cm

Year of creation: c. 1890

Labels & Inscriptions: Name on reverse, probably relating to its previous owner.

Provenance: Private collection, Sweden.

Condition: Artwork presents well. Craquelure but the paint is stable. Previous restorations including areas of in-painting. Frame with some light wear.
