There is a great exhibition on in Paris at the Petit Palais at the moment, entitled "Modern Paris/Le Paris de la Modernité 1905-1925" ... and this painting would fit into the exhibition perfectly!

Its audacious and purist composition depicts one of the stages of the Champs Elysées Theatre, the importance of which for modernist Paris is hard to overestimate.

Built between 1911 and 1913 on Avenue Montaigne, it became the first example of Art Deco architecture in the city. Less than two months after its inauguration, the Théâtre hosted the world premiere of the Ballets Russes' Rite of Spring, which provoked one of the most famous classical music riots. Josephine Baker caused a sensation there with the Revue Nègre in 1925.

Interestingly, our painting was also exhibited in the salons of one of the Champs Elysées Theatre during artist Jean Priet's exhibition there in 1928. An invitation to this exhibition is still attached to the verso of the canvas. Priet was a painter and illustrator, best known for his drawings in the "Conversation du Maréchal d'Hocquincourt".

The present painting must have held a special place in the heart of the artist. According to a touching label on the back of the stretcher, the work never left the family: over the decades, it was passed on from Jean Priet to Cécile Priet and then on to Nicole Priet.

Measuring 65 x 54 cm, the painting on thick jute is signed at the lower right and presented in a modernist oak box frame. The overall framed size is 68 x 57 cm.
