The Old Forester Oil Painting by Carl Pluckebaum 1880-1952

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine oil on board by the German artist Carl Pluckebaum 1880-1952. The painting is titled on the reverse in German ‘The Old Forester’ and depicts a hunter out with his dog in the most wonderful snow-covered landscape with a windmill in the distance. Carl Pluckebaum was a genre painter and etcher from the Dusseldorf school of painting. The young artist won a substantial prize from the Düsseldorf Museum of Decorative Arts in 1901 and used the funds to study at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He travelled widely in Italy and beyond developing a style that had a subtle humour and playful nature. He married the artist Meta Weber and the pair did work together particularly on works depicting children and they were highly regarded in their native Germany. This work is a particularly good example of the artist with a great juxtaposition between the white impressionist landscape and the bold, strong and slightly humorous figure. The piece is signed to the lower right and retains details on the reverse in pencil indicating it was one of his exhibited works. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The frame is the original with a title plaque and is silvered with a faded gilt edge. The whole is a wonderfully decorative image with a great sense of fun. C.1920.
