Pair of Canadian Landscape Paintings by Paul Alfred 1892-1959

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine pair of mixed media landscapes on board by Canadian artist Paul Alfred Ernest Meister. The two works are beautifully created in watercolour and gouache giving them a stunning bright colour. The technique is bold and confident with big splashes of colour from thick brushes and using the tone of the board to give outline and definition. The pieces are both titled one is ‘little green pump’ and the other ‘Autumn’. The landscapes shown are undoubtedly the artist’s native Canada probably Ottawa. The pieces are both signed: ‘Paul Alfred’ which is typical for the artist who didn’t sign his full name. Paul Alfred Ernest Meister (1892-1959), was born in the Staffordshire and studied at the Polytechnic School of Art. In 1908 his family moved to Ottawa where Paul worked for a time as a draftsman. Early in WWI he joined the army and served in England. After the war he studied for a short time at London's Chelsea Polytechnic School. On his return to Ottawa, he was employed as a map draftsman in the Department of the Interior, also as an artist, preparing illustrations for government publications. He was a teacher at the Ottawa Art School and a member of the "Ottawa Group" of artists whose work was exhibited in London, England in 1924 (when I suspect these pieces came here). In 1940, Paul again joined the army and in the course of his WWII service he painted murals for army messes in Ottawa and Petawawa. After the war he worked for the Department of National Defence before retiring in 1950. Two of Paul Alfred's paintings are in the collection of the Canadian National Gallery and another is held by Library and Archives Canada he was also a member of the Ontario Society of Artists and that is why in the title of these paintings the letters OSA follow his name. The pair are in good condition however there has been some slight water damage to the winter scene. The frames are the original, as are the mounts and both are in excellent untouched condition with a feel for the Arts and Crafts movement in design. The pair are wonderful pieces of Canadian art with an intense feel for colour and decorative appeal. C.1920.
