Paris Ca 1905, the Seine at Dawn, Buildings of the Ile Saint Louis, the Pont Marie, French Oil on Board

Description

If you are familiar with the City of Light, you will know that these are indeed the colours of Paris: soft light greys, mauves, pinks and blues that are as subtle as they are captivating.

Depicted on this gorgeous little oil sketch is the Pont Marie bridge which leads to the Ile Saint Louis, an ancient part of the city.

It is just a hunch, but I believe it was probably a foreign artist discovering and capturing his new home city when he painted this oil on board was painted in circa 1905 - I feel the painting has a sense of marvel that comes from an outsider. So many artists arrived from Russia, Eastern Europe, Japan and China at the beginning of the 20th Century, and one of them may well have painted this little gem.

There is a trace of signature to the lower left and a date that might read 1904 or 1907.

Measuring 15.5 x 16.5 cm for the painting alone, the overall framed size of this oil on panel is 22 x 25.5 cm
