Cast iron doorstops gained popularity during the Victorian era as homes shifted towards heavier interior doors and coal fires required doors to be kept open or shut to regulate draughts. Foundries utilised sand-casting techniques to produce functional items in varied animal, floral, and figural motifs.

These pieces were produced using traditional sand-casting methods, where molten iron was poured into moulds created from wooden or metal patterns. Once cooled and cleaned, the heavy iron objects were often hand-painted with lead-based oil paints to provide colour and texture.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit genuine weight, crisp detailing from hand-chased moulds, and natural wear to the painted surface, such as fine crazing and oxidation. Modern reproductions often feel lighter, feature overly smooth surfaces, or display artificial distressing rather than genuine age-related patina.

Such sculptural objects serve as characterful decorative accents on shelves, sideboards, or used functionally as weighted doorstops. They introduce texture, industrial weight, and a touch of heritage whimsy to contemporary or transitional spaces.

Preservation involves keeping the item in a stable indoor environment away from excessive moisture to prevent rust. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or water on the painted surfaces to protect the original finish.
