Watercolour Portrait by Ignaz Rungaldier (1799-1876)

19th century
Description

A fabulous quality watercolour portrait of a gentleman by the Austrian artist Ignaz Rungaldier. The portrait is worked in exquisite detail and is bright and fresh of colour and is signed to the left of the work. Ignaz Rungaldier (1799-1876) was born in Graz, Austria, the son of a goldsmith, Johann Georg Rungaldier. He studied at the Academy in Vienna before becoming a portrait painter, primarily in watercolour but also in miniature. He worked in a style close to that of his Viennese contemporaries Johann Ender (1793?–?1854) and Joseph Kriehuber (1801?–?76), like them, his clientele was largely drawn from the Viennese aristocracy. The sitter in the piece is unknown but undoubtedly is a gentleman of some wealth. The work is in good condition with the odd minor mark to the paper. The portrait is framed in a period rosewood frame with gilt slip, this has a good untouched colour and patina. The whole is a great example of portraiture of this type and has a perfect period look. C.1840.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
