Morning Mists Pastel Landscape by H.j.dutton

A wonderfully atmospheric pastel landscape titled ‘Morning mists’ by Harold John Dutton (1889-1971). The work is of the most superb technical ability reproducing perfectly on paper the feeling of mist in a wooded landscape early in the morning. The work is signed to the lower right ‘H J Dutton’. Harold John Dutton was born in Birmingham in 1889 but spent most of his life in Nottingham. He was Art Master at the Claremont Secondary School. He worked in oil, pastel and pencil all with exquisite delicacy. Three of his works are in the permanent collection at the Nottingham Castle Art Gallery. He was a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists holding several offices there. He was awarded the Holbrook prize on many occasions from 1930-1948 and had works exhibited at the Nottingham Castle Quincentenary Exhibition in 1949. He also exhibited at the Birmingham Society of Artists amongst others. This work reflects his style and ability brilliantly and is in good untouched condition with the odd minor mark. The landscape retains the original good quality gilt frame which is in excellent condition and the label on the reverse indicates it was one of his exhibited pieces. The whole is a stunning example of what can be achieved with pastels. C.1940.
