Hardman & Co. Stained Glass Window Design, Minchinhampton Church - Antique Watercolour

19th century
Description

This beautiful late 19th-century watercolour by British stained-glass manufacturer Hardman & Co carries a design for Holy Trinity Church, Minchinhampton, Stroud.

Founded in 1838, Hardman & Co was considered one of the world’s leading manufacturers of stained glass. It was a family business led by John Hardman Senior (1766-1844).

Initially established for the design and manufacturing of metalwork, Hardman entered the stained glass industry following the advice of leading gothic-revival architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852). A decision which led to decades of collaboration between the Hardman and Pugin families.

Here, in this example from circa 1877, we see a Hardman design for Holy Trinity Church in Minchinhampton, which incorporates four biblical scenes. The church was rebuilt during the mid-19th century and features a 14th-century tower.

Hardman & Co’s work for the east window and the south rose window remains in complete condition today.
