George a Elcock, Reading for Grandma - Antique Oil Painting

19th century
Description

This fine late 19th-century oil painting by British artist George A Elcock (1856-1946) depicts a gentle interior scene with a young girl reading to her grandmother.

One gets the impression that this is a regular occurrence within the walls of this quaint English cottage. It’s reading time, when the young lady picks up her favourite book, sits by the light of the window, and reads to grandma. Domestic bliss. Even the cat is soothed by the tranquil ambience.

Elcock’s handling is remarkable. Note how the light falls across the back wall with its pictures and mirror. And the loaf on the table, freshly baked and sliced. Probably by grandma herself.

Elcock had several children of his own so had plenty of inspiration. Although it remains to be seen whether his own abode was quite as harmonious.

Signed lower right and held within a gilt frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 21” x 29” / 54cm x 74cm

Year of creation: c. 1890

Labels & Inscriptions: Gallery label on reverse.

Provenance: Private collection, England.

Condition: Artwork presents well. Canvas relined. Frame with some light wear.

George A Elcock was a British artist predominantly known for his gentle interior scenes portraying families in domestic settings but he also produced landscapes and still lifes. During the late 19th century, he exhibited at several venues including at the Suffolk Street Gallery in London. When into his 40s, he switched careers and became a fabric designer.
