Wigs on the Green has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
Although lacking a signature or inscription, this may actually well be a self-portrait. It dates to around 1860.
The watercolour is presented in a flat profile bird's eye maple veneer frame with a gilded slip. The frame has losses to the veneer at the corners and along the edges. The slip is also distressed but the beauty of the portrait more then makes up for the frame.
