William Tatton Winter Rba, the Little Coppice - Antique Watercolour

1900 - 1920
Description

This early 20th-century watercolour by British artist William Tatton Winter (1855-1928) depicts a Summertime view with birch trees.

Spindly verticals crowd the left of this composition. The familiar forms of silver birch trees vie for attention. One stands almost bolt upright while another meanders upwards, their lithe branches supporting a canopy of impressionistic dabs.

Beyond, the picturesque ebullience extends across ambling hedgerows rendered in tints. A sprinkling of white flora shimmers like a waterway. The horizon, little more than a mere suggestion.

Tatton Winter’s dreamlike works seem to capture a Utopian vision. A restful, near-ethereal, environment where the emerging realities of the urban sprawl are lost amid the grasses.

Signed in the lower left, framed and glazed.
