Prometheus Antiques has dated this piece to the 1930s.
The technique is impressionist with a bold use of colour and texture. There is an attribution to the work on the reverse of William Campbell who is recorded in the area and did exhibit at the prestigious Glasgow Institute of Fine Art. The painting has been professionally cleaned and some small repairs made. The work retains the original period frame which has a bronzed finish, it is worn in places in keeping with the age and piece. The painting is a great period artwork of a wonderful subject and the darkness contrasting with the lights gives it a dramatic presence. C.1935.
