Nineteenth-century British watercolours typically feature delicate washes of pigment on paper, often depicting domestic genre scenes, landscapes, or portraits with a high degree of narrative detail.

These works were created using water-soluble pigments applied to rag paper, frequently mounted behind glass in wooden frames to protect the fragile surface from environmental damage.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper stock for watermark indicators, checking for period-appropriate framing techniques, and observing the natural ageing of the pigments and paper fibres.

Mounting the artwork in a neutral, acid-free slip with a classic timber frame allows it to act as a sophisticated focal point on a gallery wall or above a traditional sideboard.

Preservation requires displaying the artwork away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, maintaining stable relative humidity levels, and ensuring conservation-grade framing materials are utilised.
