Description

A charming ship portrait in coloured pastels or crayons. The ship is the General Gordon of London under full sail. The work is in some ways quite naïve and primitive and is likely to have been done by a child copying an image from a book or newspaper. The drawing is in good condition with the odd mark to the paper. The very unusual faux maple frame is the original and of the period though the work has been refitted at some point. The whole has a great folk-art look and is ready to hang. C.1900.

Overall sizes in inches including frame: 24 ½ by 20

Date of Manufacture

Prometheus Antiques has dated this Antique Ship Drawing to the 1900s.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Maritime drawings and port portraits were frequently created to document merchant vessels, warships, and clipper ships, often commissioned by ship captains, owners, or created as souvenirs in major ports.

These works were typically executed on paper using watercolour, ink, pencil, or gouache, and housed in traditional wooden frames with glass protection.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct paper ageing, hand-mixed pigments, genuine plate marks or hand-drawn ink lines, and period framing techniques rather than modern offset printing dots.

Pair this piece with neutral walls, natural textures like timber and linen, or incorporate it into a gallery wall alongside other vintage topographical or botanical prints.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent paper degradation and fading, and ensure acid-free backing materials are used inside the frame.
