Christian Tilemann-petersen, the Tapestry Room at Svanholm Manor - Antique Oil Painting

1900 - 1920
Description

This fine early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Christian Tilemann-Petersen (1874-1926) depicts the tapestry room at Svanholm Manor.

Porcelain stands in symmetry upon a white console table with gilding - untarnished and pristine. Two piles of old books are stacked neatly on a plush red tablecloth. A woodland tapestry covers the back wall, partially reflected in a grand mirror.

Tilemann-Petersen was a painter of opulent interiors. Recording with precision the sumptuous furnishings of noble Danish manor houses. He approached each object with respect, carefully rendering the finer details. You get the sense that he appreciated the craftsmanship involved.

The Svanholm Estate is situated around 55 kilometres from his home in Copenhagen. The mansion is comprised of three wings and dates to 1744. In 1920, it was owned by Preben Vilhelm Bille-Brahe who inherited it from his father. Today, it’s home to a self-sufficient farming community.

Signed/dated lower left. Unframed but would hang well as a canvas.
